J. Brett Smith was trained in evolutionary biology and philosophy. Currently he works as an aquatic field biologist in Alabama and is a member of the University of Alabama Evolution Working Group. He assumed that running, rugby football, and a “decent” diet would help him avoid metabolic syndrome. But in the spring of 2012, after experiencing weight gain, joint pain, anxiety, and other ailments, he started actually eating paleo instead of merely knowing about the evolutionary logic behind it. The results were transformative, and he now continues to explore and experiment with the ancestral health approach and share evolutionary health promotion with others.
